Nasometry

A method to quantitatively measure nasality

By comparing the different amplitudes between oral acoustic energy and nasal acoustic energy, nasometry provides an objective and quantitative measurement of nasality.

What is Nasalance?

Nasalance is the proportion of air that leaves through the nose while someone is talking [1]. It is calculated with the following equation:

A higher nasalance score indicates an greater degree of nasality.

What is Nasometry?

Nasometry is the only method to quantitatively measure the nasalance of speech. Using a baseplate to separate air flow, microphones pick up the acoustic energy of the air orginating from the nasal and oral cavities. These values are then used to calculate the nasalance score and diagnose conditions such as hypo- and hypernasality.
